Will children catch up without professional help?
Children very seldom catch up once they fall behind unless there is intervention and remediation. Good readers add 2000-3000 words to their sight word vocabularies each year. Once slow readers get behind, the only way they can reach grade level is to learn faster than their peers are learning during the same period of time. This requires intensive, scientifically proven intervention. By 3rd grade, children must be reading to learn and writing to think, rather than learning to read and write.
