Who needs screenings?

These tests are ideal for identifying younger students who have difficulty understanding language and expressing themselves or making and keeping friends. The screenings are also excellent ways to identify children who have challenges with pronunciation, focus or sustained attention. Teachers and parents can turn to our expert speech-language pathologists to sort out the causes of various early childhood challenges and then receive the invaluable early intervention needed for school success.

Where do the screenings take place?

One of our California licensed, speech-language pathologists will go out to local preschools and community centers, or students may visit our facilities in Del Mar or La Jolla.

Why are screenings important?

Children who have speech and language delays often have difficulty learning to read and write. Pronunciation problems are frequently related to difficulties learning the sound-letter associations necessary for mastering phonics. Children who have language delays are at risk for having reading comprehension problems.

Shouting, loud talking and other forms of vocal abuse can result in physical changes to the vocal cords which may require surgery. An unhealthy voice can also affect a child’s self esteem.

Children who “stutter” and those with persistent pronunciation problems may develop social problems resulting from the inevitable teasing by their siblings and peers. These children may become withdrawn and unable to answer questions in class, give oral presentations or even communicate comfortably with their friends and family.

How much do screenings cost?

The cost is only $40 per student for a 20 minute individual screening test. This fee includes a brief written report for the parent and teacher. Teacher interviews and parent conferences for children with concerns are included as well.
